Heal2gether Patient Lisa Summers

DFU-imageElementary school teacher, Lisa Summers found out she had diabetes when she had a burn on her leg that wouldn't heal. She decided she was going to get fit and during her first night in the gym she got a simple blister on her foot. Lisa explained that she didn't realize the blister was forming because she had no feeling in her feet.

When she showed her doctor her blister, he told her he didn't think she would be able to keep her foot and referred her to a wound care specialist. After using a hyperbaric chamber and a wound vac her physician started using Dermagraft. After the second application she saw a noticeable difference and by the eighth application her wound had healed. Looking back on her treatment process, Lisa states: "There is hope--I'm living proof of it. "If I hadn't had the Dermagraft—if I hadn't had all the help I had, I wouldn't be able to go back to my life."
While undergoing treatment, Lisa spent three days a week at the hospital receiving dialysis and met her future husband, Roger, who was also being treated for a diabetic foot ulcer. Both Lisa's and Roger's foot sores healed and they are both back at work today. Lisa believes that out of this challenging situation she not only met the person she will spend the rest of her life with, but also received the opportunity to speak out about diabetic foot care and help others facing similar experiences.
