Spam Linked to Diabetes in Native Americans

Spam_CanSeems there's no escaping news about diabetes these days. Lately, we've seen an outpouring of nutritional criticism over celebrity chef Paula Deen's new deal to promote Novartis's (NYSE:NVS) diabetes drug Victoza. That endorsement came along with the news that Southern cooking specialist Deen suffers from Type 2 diabetes. Then on Friday, the Food & Drug Administration approved a new diabetes treatment from Amylin (NASDAQ:AMLN) that holds great promise. The new drug, Bydureon, is a once-a-week injectable and adds a new weapon to combat this growing scourge.

Soda does it again

Soda does it again: Fructose is found to increase cardiovascular and diabetes risk in adolescents

Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University have published evidence that cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk is present in the blood fractions of adolescents who consume a lot of fructose, a scenario that worsens in the face of excess belly fat. Published in the Journal of Nutrition, scientists determined that high dietary fructose consumption results in lower levels of cardiovascular protectors such as HDL cholesterol and adiponectin, due in part to how the body metabolizes the fruit-based mega-sweetener at the cellular level. Excess body fat accumulated around the mid-section, a rapidly growing problem in adolescents, compounds the problem when compared to those with less visceral fat deposits. A wealth of scientifically validated research studies now highlight the importance of eliminating fructose in all its forms from the diets of both adults and children alike to dramatically reduce risk of diabetes and heart disease.

What you need to know about Sucralose

sucralose_molecule

Sucralose: What are the pros?

Sucralose is the newest nonnutritive sweetener on the market. It is most well known for its claim to be made from sugar. It is used alone or found in Splenda and is 600 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar). When used alone, it provides essentially no calories and is not fully absorbed. In 1998, it was approved for limited use, and in 1999, it was given approval for use as a general-purpose sweetener. It is currently found in over 4,500 products, including foods that are cooked or baked. This artificial sweetener that can be used for cooking, so it has rapidly become one of the most popular and highly consumed artificial sweeteners.

What’s the skinny on Stevia

Stevia_is_it_a_good_substitute_for_diabetesThis year, a few noncaloric sweeteners made from an extract of the Stevia rebaudiana plant arrived on grocery-store shelves. The stevia plant has a long history of use as a sweetener in South America. These new sweeteners—sold under brand names like Truvia and PureVia—include a highly purified extract of stevia called Rebaudioside A (a.k.a. Rebiana or Reb A). Reb A is 200 times sweeter than sugar and does not raise blood sugar.

Until December 2008, stevia and its derivatives could be sold in the U.S. only as dietary supplements, due to safety concerns. In the 1980s, animal studies linked stevia with adverse effects on fertility and reproductive development and possible genetic mutations. But in 2008, the makers of Truvia and PureVia submitted research to the Food and Drug Administration regarding Reb A’s safety and petitioned for it to become a generally regarded as safe (GRAS) ingredient.

Virgin Coconut Oil and Diabetes

coconutIndeed VCNO has a substantial effect on blood sugar levels. My wife and daughter (both have type 2 diabetes) measure their blood sugar levels at least three times a day.

When they eat the wrong foods and their blood sugar levels get to 80-100 points above normal, they don't take extra medication, they take 2-3 tablespoons of the coconut oil directly from the bottle. Within a half hour their blood sugar levels will come back to normal.

A Beginners Guide To Tea

tea

Tea is second only to water as the most consumed drink in the world. In the UK alone, it is estimated that about 120 million cups of tea are drunk every day!

But how much do you actually know about the diminutive tea leaf? This guide is your starting point into the fascinating world of tea.

All tea comes from the leaves and buds of just one very special plant species - Camellia Sinensis.  Even though all tea comes from one plant there are about 1500 varietals of Camellia Sinensis. These range from small and delicate shrubs to large and ancient wild tea trees (up to 800 years old!).

Spirulina the Super Food

Super food: Spirulina significantly aids allergy sufferers and improves exercise performance

Spirulina is a blue-green algae which is commercially produced and widely marketed as a "superfood" and immune booster. It is also a rich source of natural, plant-based iron, calcium, vitamin A and vitamin C, and an excellent source of plant protein, with up to 70% of its dry weight being protein. The alpha-linolenic acid profile in spirulina is the highest in the plant kingdom, coming in third overall behind milk and evening primrose oil.

Half of all Americans are now obese

obesity_cut_awayJust take a look around. It's pretty clear that many of us are carrying more weight than we used to. Obesity has skyrocketed in recent years, and it's not about to stop. Roughly one in three adults is obese today, and researchers now predict that 164 million adults will be obese by 2030. That's half of all adults in the country.

Claire Wang of Columbia University worked on the mathematical modeling with colleagues. She said that the sweeping epidemic of obesity would add $66 billion to our nation's health costs yearly by that 2030 date.

What is Agave?

Agave_is_it_a_good_substitute_for_diabetesMany of us think of agave nectar or blue agave as a medicinal plant whose juice or sap has been traditionally used for thousands of years by South American natives, but of late, the agave sweetener purchased in stores has become a controversial sweetener.

Coined as “"diabetic friendly," raw”, “tastes like honey”, "100% natural" and sold far more expensive than table sugar or high fructose syrup, agave nectar unfortunately might just turn out to be another highly refined form of fructose that has been disguised as a natural sweetener. As businesses go in great lengths to gratify the health and natural foods communities, critics warn that agave syrup is sneaking into many foods deceptively labeled as organic or raw, including ketchup, ice-cream, chocolate, fruit juices, and health food bars.

Health Benefits of Flax Seed

flaxseed

The consumption of flaxseed is associated with a reduction in total cholesterol, including the LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides.

Study after study has shown a positive response to eating ground flax seed daily. Eating low fat foods, increasing your exercise, limiting the salt, sugar and eating flax seed daily are a few ways that you can win the battle against high cholesterol.

Honey and Diabetes

honeyThe diabetic diet is strictly controlled in terms of sugar and mineral compounds intake. Hence it's not surprising that "whether honey is allowed for diabetic patients" is a frequently asked question from people with Diabetes.

Diabetes is a deficiency of the pancreas, whereby insulin is not produced sufficiently or utilised properly. It’s basically a disorder of metabolism, primarily that of carbohydrates. The ingested sugars and starches cannot be deployed, and hence are eliminated in the urine. Symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, extreme thirst or hunger, weight loss, fatigue, numbness, and infections.

Momordica Charantia

A relatively common food item, bitter melon was traditionally used for a dazzling array of conditions by people in tropical regions. Numerous infections, cancer, leukemia, and diabetes are among the most common conditions it was believed to improve.

At least three different groups of constituents in bitter melon have been reported to have hypoglycemic (blood sugar lowering) or other actions of potential benefit in diabetes mellitus. These include a mixture of steroidal saponins known as charantin, insulin-like peptides, and alkaloids.
