Diabetes in the Elderly

Diabetes_in_the_ElderlyDiabetes in the elderly will be the epidemic in this Century. Current data suggests that about 20% of patients over the age of 65 will develop diabetes at some point in their life. At least half the patients are unaware that they have the disease yet these patients are still susceptible to the complications of the illness.

Recently, the diagnostic criteria for diabetes have been changed which means that we are going to detect even more cases of diabetes in older individuals. It is now recommended that every person over age 45 should have a fasting blood sugar test once every three years to screen for diabetes. A fasting blood sugar test should be performed yearly in people who are at high risk which includes patients with hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol, a history of gestational diabetes, or a strong family history of diabetes.

New Approach to Treating Type 1 Diabetes?

Transforming Gut Cells Into Insulin Factories

ScienceDaily (Mar. 11, 2012) — A study by Columbia researchers suggests that cells in the patient's intestine could be coaxed into making insulin, circumventing the need for a stem cell transplant. Until now, stem cell transplants have been seen by many researchers as the ideal way to replace cells lost in type I diabetes and to free patients from insulin injections.

The research -- conducted in mice -- was published 11 March 2012 in the journal Nature Genetics.

Johnson & Johnson hid studies showing Risperdal drug caused diabetes, says victim

Johnson-and-Johnson-logoFor the first time, an individual user of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) antipsychotic drug Risperdal is suing the pharmaceutical giant for allegedly committing fraud and lying about the safety of the drug. According to reports, Fletch Trammell, lawyer for the individual filing the suit, told a New Jersey jury that J&J knew as early as 1999 that Risperdal caused diabetes, but lied about it to the public in order to protect billions of dollars in sales.

Diabetes once again linked to colon cancer

Can_type_2_diabetes_be_curedThe findings, reported in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, do not prove that diabetes directly contributes to colon cancer in some people. The results come from observational studies in which people with diabetes were found to have a higher risk of colon cancer than those without diabetes. In most of the studies, the researchers adjusted for at least some factors that might explain the link - like older age, obesity and smoking - and the diabetes-cancer connection remained. However, there could still be other explanations. "I think we can make the statement that diabetes is consistently associated with colorectal cancer," Dr Edward Giovannucci of the Harvard School of Public Health, who was not involved the study, told Reuters Health in an email. "The cause-and-effect aspect is a bit difficult to consider since diabetes is such a complex disease," said Giovannucci, who studies the underlying causes of colon cancer. He said it seems likely that some aspect of diabetes contributes to colon cancer, but it's not certain what.

The pancreas and diabetes

Pancreas_FullThe main function of the pancreas is to produce various enzymes which aid in the digestive process as well as to convert sugar to energy. The pancreas secrete enzyme and hormones, including insulin that is needed for the digestion and absorption of food.

The utilization of glucose in the body is regulated by insulin. Insulin is needed by all body tissues except the brain for the absorption of glucose. The failure of the pancreas to produce or secrete sufficient quantities of insulin will result in diseases called diabetes mellitus.

Excerpts About
DIABETES & MEN

More men than women have diabetes, which is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States; the death rate is nearly 1.5 times higher for men than for women. Men are 32% more likely than women to be hospitalized for long-term complications of diabetes; they are also more than twice as likely as women to have a leg or foot amputated as a result of complications related to the disease. In addition, the risk for cardiovascular death is 2 to 4 times higher for people with diabetes. During a 12-year period, people with diabetes are 3 times more likely to suffer an incident of cardiovascular disease than people without diabetes and who have normal blood pressure. As noted in Chapter 1, heart disease kills 1.5 times more men than women. Diabetes is also a risk factor for sudden cardiac death, which strikes 3 times more men than women. People with diabetes are at 2 to 6 times more risk for death from stroke. Recent research also suggests a link between diabetes and cancer.

How Do I Find Out if I Am at Risk for Heart Disease?

risks_for_heart_diseaseThe first step toward heart health is becoming aware of your own personal risk for heart disease.  Some risks, such as smoking cigarettes, are obvious:  everyone knows whether or not you smoke.  But other risk factors, such as high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol, generally don't have obvious signs or symptoms.  So you'll need to gather some information to create your personal "heart profile."

Complications and Amputation Prevention

diabetes-amputation-complicationsPeople with diabetes are prone to having foot problems, often because of two complications of diabetes: nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor circulation. Neuropathy causes loss of feeling in your feet, taking away your ability to feel pain and discomfort, so you may not detect an injury or irritation. Poor circulation in your feet reduces your ability to heal, making it hard for even a tiny cut to resist infection.

Having diabetes increases the risk of developing a wide range of foot problems. Furthermore, with diabetes, small foot problems can turn into serious complications.

Signs of Diabetes

An animal with diabetes mellitus will exhibit some or all of the following symptoms: weakness, increased thirst, frequent urination, rapid weight loss, depression and abdominal pain. An animal may also show signs of either increased hunger or lack of appetite. In some animals, the sudden development of blindness due to cataract formation may indicate diabetes.

Causes

Diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats is caused by damage to the pancreas. Predisposing factors are: obesity, genetic predisposition, poor diet, hormonal abnormalities, stress and drugs. The sex of the animal can also be a predisposing factor. In dogs, females are affected twice as often as males and in cats, diabetes is more prevalent in males.

Spam or not to: Government-distributed spam canned meat products linked to causing doubled risk of diabetes

A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found that processed, canned meat products -- these are collectively known as "spam," as is the brand-name version of the canned meat popularly known as "SPAM" -- are linked to a double risk of developing diabetes. Particularly among American Indians who consume lots of spam given them by the U.S. government, diabetes risk is exceptionally high.

Muffins Help Doctors Diagnose Diabetes

JUST WHAT THE DR ORDERED,MUFFINS HELP DOCTORS DIAGNOSE DIABETES

Muffin-test-for-glucose-intoleranceGiving a "muffin test" to people at risk for diabetes might help doctors diagnose the disease and its warning signs, according to a new study. Tests for diabetes and its precursor, impaired glucose tolerance, check how well the body uses glucose, a type of sugar. In one common test, called an oral glucose tolerance test, a person fasts overnight and then drinks a sugary solution while doctors monitor how the body reacts and how much sugar sticks around in the blood.

Childhood ADHD Linked to Dabetes in Pregnancy

pregnantAccording to new research, a baby born to a mother with gestational diabetes mellitus, diabetes that is brought about by pregnancy, and who is poor appears to be at far greater risk for eventually developing childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) - 14 times greater than children exposed to neither.

10 Symptoms of Kidney Disease

The_kidneyMany people who have chronic kidney disease don't know it, because the early signs can be very subtle. It can take many years to go from chronic kidney disease (CKD) to kidney failure. Some people with CKD live out their lives without ever reaching kidney failure.

However, for people at any stage of kidney disease, knowledge is power. Knowing the symptoms of kidney disease can help you get the treatment you need to feel your best. If you or someone you know has one or more of the following symptoms of kidney disease, or you are worried about kidney problems, see a doctor for blood and urine tests. Remember, many of the symptoms can be due to reasons other than kidney disease. The only way to know the cause of your symptoms is to see your doctor.

Type 2 Diabetes and High Cholesterol

Learn more about the effects of cholesterol

Many people with type 2 diabetes have dangerously high levels of LDL "bad" cholesterol and fat-like substances called triglycerides that circulate in the blood stream. These elevated levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Link Found Between AIDS Medications and Diabetes

aids-cellNew York (MedscapeWire) May 23 - AIDS drugs that dramatically prolong the lives of many HIV-infected people also quickly block the body's ability to store glucose, scientists have found.

Their research explains why people who take HIV-protease inhibitors are prone to develop diabetes. It suggests that doctors might need to alter the way they test HIV-infected patients for diabetes. And it suggests a way to develop new AIDS drugs without the diabetes risk.

Merck working on new drug for diabetes.

merck_logoDrug Company Merck aims to give people with type 2 diabetes two treatments for the price of one. The new therapy, called Juvisync, was just approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. It's not a radical new treatment, but instead a helpful combination of two familiar standbys: Juvisync unites the active ingredients in blood sugar-lowering Januvia and cholesterol-lowering Zocor in a single tablet.

Why combine the drugs? According to Merck, Juvisync addresses a very real and pressing oversight in treatment for type 2s. Put simply, many aren't being prescribed medicine that could improve their quality of life.

Diabetes and Colds - How to Plan

blood glucose and put you at risk for significant short-term complications. The best way to deal with sick
days is to plan for them before you're laid up. Speak with your primary-care physician, endocrinologist, and
dietitian to work out the details of a strategy you can quickly put into action the next time a cold, the flu, or
something else strikes.

Do Potato Chips Cause Cancer?

"Cancer-in-a-Can" Snack?

chips

Story at-a-glance

  • Stackable chips oftentimes contain so little actual potato that they cannot, technically, be considered “potato chips”

  • One of the most hazardous ingredients in potato chips is not intentionally added, but rather is a byproduct of the processing. Acrylamide, a cancer-causing and potentially neurotoxic chemical, is created when carbohydrate-rich foods are cooked at high temperatures, whether baked, fried, roasted or toasted

  • According to a 2005 analysis, ALL potato chip products tested exceeded the legal limit of acrylamide by 39 to 910 times, and baked chip products oftentimes contain more acrylamide than their fried counterparts
